What is a herdshare?

A herdshare is a membership arrangement between a farm and its members. By joining The Whipped Creamery's herdshare, you are acquiring an ownership interest in our dairy herd and the milk produced by that herd.

Because raw milk is not sold as a conventional retail food product in Oregon, our milk is provided through our herdshare program. Your membership establishes your relationship with the farm and your participation in the herdshare, allowing you to receive a portion of the milk produced by the herd.

Your membership is not the purchase of a specific cow or a specific quantity of milk from an individual cow. It represents your participation in the herd as a whole and the milk produced by the herd.

Why do I need to become a herdshare member to purchase milk?

Oregon does not allow the retail sale of raw cow's milk to the general public if you own more than 2 cows in milk. Because we choose to provide our milk in its raw, unpasteurized form, we operate as a herdshare rather than selling our milk as a conventional retail product.

Under Oregon's herdshare framework, members share an ownership interest in the herd and may receive a portion of the milk produced by that herd. The milk is therefore provided to members of the herdshare, rather than sold to the general public.

Becoming a member establishes your participation in The Whipped Creamery's herdshare and allows us to provide you with milk from our herd in accordance with Oregon law.

How much does membership cost, and does it expire?

Our herdshare membership is a $50 one-time fee. It is not a monthly or annual membership fee, and there are no renewals.

Once you join, your membership remains in place for the life of your participation in the herdshare, unless the membership is terminated in accordance with the Herdshare Agreement. Your membership fee covers your initial enrollment, administration, recordkeeping, jars, and establishes your ownership interest in the herd.

Milk and other dairy products are purchased separately from the membership fee.

Is there a contract or long-term commitment?

When you join the herdshare, you do agree to our Herdshare Agreement, which establishes your membership and ownership interest in the herd. However, there is no long-term commitment to purchase milk.

You are not required to maintain a weekly order. You can start, stop, pause, or schedule vacation dates for your milk as needed through your MilkShelf account. Milk and dairy products are purchased separately from your membership and are only charged when you have an active order.

Your herdshare membership itself is a one-time, lifetime membership. If you decide you no longer want to participate, you may terminate your participation at any time according to the terms of the Herdshare Agreement.

How do I become a member?

Joining the herd is simple:

  1. Purchase your $50 Herdshare Membership through our website.
  2. Complete checkout and accept the Herdshare Agreement. This establishes your membership and ownership interest in the herd.
  3. Create or log into your MilkShelf account and follow the instructions in your welcome email.
  4. Choose your milk, any available add-ons, and your preferred pickup location.
  5. Place your first order and you're ready to start receiving milk from our herd.

Your $50 membership fee is paid once and is separate from your milk and dairy product purchases.

What happens after I sign up?

Once you complete your herdshare membership and Herdshare Agreement, you'll receive information on getting started with MilkShelf. From there, you'll be able to set up your milk order, choose your pickup location, and add any other available products you'd like to receive.

What is MilkShelf?

MilkShelf is the online ordering system we use to manage our herdshare orders. It's where you'll manage your milk order, choose your pickup location, add available products, view your orders, and manage your account.

How often am I billed?

Milk and other products are billed weekly through MilkShelf. Your $50 herdshare membership fee is separate and is paid only once when you join.

Can I pause my order or set vacation dates?

Yes. There is no long-term commitment to purchase milk every week. You can pause your order or enter vacation dates directly through your MilkShelf account, so you can manage your milk around vacations, travel, or changes in your schedule.

Where and when do I pick up my milk?

When you place your order, you'll select the pickup location and day that works best for you. We offer pickup at The Whipped Creamery as well as select drop points throughout the Rogue Valley.

Your specific pickup location, day, and available times will be shown during ordering and in your order confirmation. For current locations and schedules, visit our Pickup Locations page.

Am I buying a specific cow or a specific amount of milk?

No. Your membership represents an ownership interest in the herd as a whole, not in one particular cow.

The milk from our milking cows is collected together in our bulk tank, so the milk you receive comes from the herd rather than from one specific animal. Your share gives you the right to participate in the milk produced by the herd.

Do I have to order milk every week?

No. We understand that everyone's milk needs are different.

You can adjust your milk order, pause it, or schedule vacation dates through your MilkShelf account. You don't lose your herdshare membership simply because you aren't receiving milk for a period of time.
